ENJOY AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE.
Salamanca Island received the denomination “Park Road” because it allows visitors to contemplate mangrove forests, marshes and exceptional beaches from the highway that connects Barranquilla with Santa Marta. It is declared an Important Bird Area (IBA).
Together with the Fauna and Flora Sanctuary of Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, in 1998 they were declared Ramsar Places of global importance and in November 2000, as Biosphere Reserves by UNESCO. Salamanca Island is actually a set of small islands formed by the accumulation of delta sediments of the Magdalena river over the bottom of an ancient bay, creating small channels.
These channels comprise a barrier that separates the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta from the Caribbean Sea.
