INTERESTING FACTS

Aracataca is a municipality in the department of Magdalena located 88 km from Santa Marta and approximately 150 km from Cartagena. This municipality is the birthplace of Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez and photographer and cartoonist Leo Matiz.

When “Gabo” and his mother went to Aracataca to sell the family’s house, they saw a farm with the name of Macondo, name Gabo decided to give the imaginary town of his masterpiece “One Hundred Years of Solitude”. Macondo is a town in Angola (Africa), meaning “banana” in the Bantu language, besides being associated as a tree similar to the Ceiba.
